Blackpool

We recently wrote a blog about the best things to do in Blackpool when you’re trying to keep toddlers entertained, but what about if you’re planning a family day out with teenagers? You might still need to deal with sulky tantrums and fussy eaters, but keeping teens happy and entertained can be a completely different challenge!

Thankfully, there’s so much to do in Blackpool, from adrenaline-fuelled rides and adventures to art and culture, and everything in between to help create a fantastic family day out for everyone. All you need to do is get them out of bed before midday.

Let’s have a look at some teen-themed activities and places to visit in Blackpool.

Thrills and Chills!

If your teens are the adventurous type, then here are some of the best places to visit.

Blackpool Pleasure Beach

For teen adrenaline junkies, the famous Pleasure Beach is certainly the place to go! The theme park is home is a wide range of thrilling and exhilarating rides, such as:

  • Icon, which features an accelerated launch, catapulting rides from 0-80km/h in a little over 2 seconds, and is the UK’s first double-launch rollercoaster.
  • Revolution, where your teens can experience theme park history on the UK’s first looping rollercoaster, which propels riders forwards and then backwards, for a different and exciting ride.
  • The Big One, famed amongst rollercoaster fanatics, standing over 60 metres tall, is the tallest rollercoaster in the UK and was the tallest in the world when it first opened. The sheer drops over the seafront will thrill even the most nonchalant of teens.
  • Valhalla, which recently reopened for the 2023 summer season, is a dark water flume ride that takes brave souls through a Viking odyssey through a wet and wild adventure. Take a look at our blog about when we went to visit Valhalla for ourselves! https://coralisland.co.uk/whats-on/blog/coral-island-visits-valhalla

There are many more rides and thrills at the Pleasure Beach, making it the perfect choice for daring and adventurous teenagers. For tickets and more information, visit: https://www.blackpoolpleasurebeach.com/

Sandcastle Water Park

Right across from the Pleasure Beach is Sandcastle Water Park, the place to be for teens who like splashy fun and excitement, and is the largest indoor waterpark in the UK.

There are 18 rides and attractions, including the world’s longest indoor rollercoaster water slide, and Aztec-themed raft rides. Don’t worry, parents, there are more gentle rides and places to simply sit and enjoy the balmy tropical climate too!

The park is also rightly proud of its award-winning accessibility and caters for guests with a range of needs including reduced mobility, impaired vision and hearing and more to ensure the attraction is accessible to everyone.

Advance booking will get guests a 10 per cent discount on tickets too! https://www.sandcastle-waterpark.co.uk/

The Blackpool Tower Dungeon

Blackpool Tower is certainly one of the UK’s most iconic landmarks, and there are attractions right from the top of the tower down to the Promenade, including a 4D cinema experience, the famous circus, and the Tower Ballroom. But if your teens are fans of a bit of horror, then why not experience Blackpool and the North West’s gruesome history at The Blackpool Tower Dungeon?

This interactive experience takes guests through the dark and grisly history of the area and includes live actors and storytellers, special effects, and interactive exhibits that tell the tales of the dungeon's inhabitants. Expect stories of torture, execution, and plagues!

The experience is also quite funny, and more than a little bit scary! There’s a drop ride at the end that will give your teens a final fright! Find out more at https://www.thedungeons.com/blackpool/

Ghost Tours

Sticking with the spooky and scary theme, why not book a Ghost Tour around the town, where Blackpool’s leading expert on all things supernatural, Stephen Mercer, will guide you to some of the most haunted locations, regaling you with tales of terror, murder, and spooky sightings. Teens will love it, while also learning more about the history of the town.

Wizard Golf

Are you a competitive and sporty family? Then why not challenge each other to a round of magical wizard golf? The Hole In Wand is one of Blackpool’s newest attractions and is a magical nine-hole mini golf course right next to Blackpool Tower.

It’s perfect for those who love the adventures of a certain wizard boy, as well as pitting family members against each other in a spot of friendly competition! Read more about The Hole In Wand in our recent review: https://coralisland.co.uk/whats-on/blog/coral-island-visits-hole-in-the-wand

Art and Culture

If your teens are lovers of theatre and art, then you’ll find plenty of both in Blackpool. There are always spectacular shows at Blackpool’s Grand Theatre and The Winter Gardens, with musicals, dramas, murder mysteries and more, as well as backstage tours to show your teens what goes on behind the scenes.

Maybe you’re a family of Strictly Come Dancing fans? In which case, a visit to the Tower Ballroom for afternoon tea is a must-do activity, and perhaps even take a spin around the famous dance floor for yourselves!

The Grundy Art Gallery is the place to be to see art and exhibitions, with an ever-changing calendar of modern and classic art, collections and installations.

Later in the year, during the Illuminations season, Blackpool will be hosting the Lightpool Festival once more, returning this October half-term with extraordinary free entertainment.

Running from 20-28 October, the festival features a mix of extraordinary light shows, 3D projection installations and live performances, staged across a range of indoor and outdoor venues, and the perfect accompaniment to a visit to see the famous Blackpool Illuminations.

Retail Therapy

Teens can often be very fashion-focused and if yours are shop-a-holics, then there are all the stores they could wish for in Blackpool, from big-name brands and high-street favourites to quirky boutiques and great food outlets.

Head to Houndshill Shopping Centre for the best choices with over 60 shops right in the heart of Blackpool. You’ll find all your teen’s favourites like New Look, H&M, River Island and more, as well as a range of shops offering something more unique and everything from high fashion to vintage chic.

Blackpool Favourites

No matter how old your young adults are, everyone still loves to have a walk down the Promenade, browsing all the seaside gift shops, looking for a stick of rock with their name through the middle, or enjoying an ice cream while sitting on a bench overlooking the beach.

Of course, Coral Island is a must-visit venue too, with games and rides for everyone.
